So as I was telling my boyfriend a few nights ago, (after a glass or two of wine) that there comes a time in your life, where you need to assess if you're the best You that you should be.
If you've made a couple of mistakes (some more than others), your answer would probably be no. Well, in my case - no!
Career wise, I feel I'm not where I should be, and I'm not content with earning an average salary for the next 10 years. So, I've decided ... (wait for it) ... to be a WEDDING PLANNER!
I've just completed the course at the SA School of Weddings - yes, there's actually a school for wedding planning (and other wedding realted activities). However, if one more person asks me if the school teaches people to get married, I'm. Going. To. Freak!
Moving on - It's been a very interesting and fun learning experience. I believe I'm now equipped to take the responsibility of someone's BIG day on my shoulders. * Gulps * Speaking of which, I recenty did a wedding, and I've got another one lined up for next year. It's not as easy as it looks and it's nothing like that Wedding Planner movie with JLo in it. No Wedding planner runs around in heels and a microphone on a wedding day. It's so funny to me how people who know me agree that being a wedding planner suits me - well, why didn't you suggest it all this time! *rolls eyes dramatically*
Anyway, I'm launching my business next year. It's an equally exciting and scary feeling but I'm grateful for the support system that I have. I just feel like I'm slacking and that my day job doesn't give me the reward I'm hungry for. Does anyone else feel like that? Maybe it's just me, but I've come to a point where I 've realised I need to be the change I want to see. Feel free to check out my work and wedding blog at www.impressionsforever.co.za

Supernatural Encounters
So, even though I've steadily grown spiritually, I must say, I'm finding myself with more and more questions. My latest fascination, was inspired by a conversation that sparked up after a party at my house 2 nights ago...
My boyfriend's friend, (let's call him Peter, shall we) told us he was swimming in the complex pool with his girlfriend in the evening. Suddenly, a group of people appeared and told them to vacate the pool area because they needed to proceed with their cult meeting. Peter immediately did as he was told. He said the meetings occurred quite regularly and that he personally knew some of the members, as they are students at the nearby Uni. He then continued to say that one of them had actually showed up at my party.
Alright. *takes deep breath* everyone else seemed pretty calm when they heard this. I recall hearing a few chuckles as well. Can we please just take a step back here... OCCULT MEETINGS!!... BY THE POOL AREA!!... IN THE COMPLEX!!!
Am I the only one who finds this incredibly scary? I mean, even though I have a West African boyfriend, he's told me these stories a number of times, but, now it's actually hit home. Literally. It's happening right at the place where I take my afternoon Sunday dips.
This has come to a point where people no longer need to hide it. Or maybe I had been misinformed. I always thought things like that were done in secret, and that the members are sworn to secrecy, and wear masks when they have their meetings. Oh! and that the meetings would be in a more discreet place maybe?? I guess that's the movie version.
I often ask my boyfriend why West Africans are so spiritual. They are either Christians, or they perform some sort of rituals. He says, if you're a lukewarm Christian- you will probably be killed off. You have to decide what you are, and practice it to the core.
As someone who grew up attending a Methodist Church, I would say, I was never really taught about these things, nor was I equipped with the knowledge of how to deal with it. I think that's why it scares me so much. I literally had to take a moment to pray and ask for protection. My neighbor could literally be a member of these things....
We really have to equip ourselves with spiritual weapons. Ignorance is not an excuse, and the enemy clearly doesn't rest. It's so easy to just ignore these things and pretend they don't exist, but it became clear to me last night, that I need to make a stand, and stop being an "I-pray-on-Sundays" Christian.

Past. Present! Future?
It's when your boyfriend starts saying things like, "Just trying to set us up for our future... So you'll have to bear with me for now"... that you realize, Oh shit! I might just be with this person forever. It's scary and exciting at the same time.
I mean, how strange is it that giving someone your number could alter your happiness for the rest of your life?? *Mind. Blown*
Meanwhile, back in the outer limits of my brain... I've heard this all before. And believed it all before. Long story short. That didn't go as planned. Due to past events, I now struggle to have faith in statements that should have me gleaming with joy. It's so hard to get over being told that you aren't good enough, or that you come from a broken home and that you're the product of a dead beat father.
Coming out of all that, then meeting an amazing guy, kinda feels like I bit off more than I could chew. Am I ready for this? Am I ready to receive love that's unconditional when I don't even feel worthy of it?
I think the purest form of love that I had died when I realized I had been naive. I find myself wondering if I'll ever love like that again. I feel broken. It is somewhat unfair for the guy I'm dating now. He's giving me his entire heart, and I'm giving him what's left of mine. I wonder if it will ever be whole again. Now I'm starting to sound like those over emotional junkies. Great. This is really not the vibe I was going for when I decided to blog today. This was supposed to be a 'Hooray, I'm in love and my boyfriend is seeing a future with me' post! Well, so much for that. I suppose I should amend the title to something depressing as a warning... okay, this is getting weird, I'm talking to myself and making you read it. Okay. Bye.

2 Years later...
So, remember the girl I posted about in October 2013... (you can quickly click on the link and read it if you need to refresh your memory: That girl I've seen around )Anyway, this news is bittersweet. Palesa disappeared after a visit from her friend's house, on her way to school. However, she never actually got to school. So we all assumed that something had happened to her on the way. A number of us talked about the possible scenarios, like, she was hit by a car and the motorist panicked and disposed of the body somewhere. Or that she had been kidnapped and human trafficked. Or even that she had eloped to France with a handsome foreign guy.
(Okay, maybe that last one is a bit much.) Never the less, no one expected the news that surfaced a few weeks ago.
The police received a tip off that her body was buried in her friend's back yard. Yes! The friend she had visited. PLOT TWIST!!! I mean, how did that family keep her body in the yard for 2 years???
I wish we had a forensics
team from those CSI shows to examine her remains and find out exactly how she died. The police haven't said much yet. A funeral was held at the university this past weekend for her.
I know it's sad that she is no longer alive, but I do hope this will bring the family closure, and that they can finally be at peace.
I guess it's safe to say there are a lot of parents who won't want their children to visit their friends now.

Interesting Encounters
So, it's 2016. A new year. New me? Nah... not so much.
Everything is just going... slow. On a more positive note. I met a lady on new year's eve. I assume she's in her early 30s or late 20s. She was tall, with a body of a model. She had an elegant charm about her. In a nutshell, she studied law and she recently got a job offer at the UN, so she's leaving for New York in march.
"I'm a hard worker. I will not settle for anything less than the best that I can be. I'm going to New York and my circles include people like Richard Branson and (she mentioned another name that I didn't recognize, but I'm sure the person is affluent)!"
I just listened to the way she spoke. She is so ambitious, eloquent and confident. In all honesty, her story didn't make me jealous or envious, but rather, got me thinking if I'm the best Yolanda I could have been.
Quite frankly, no, I am not.
It's sad really. Knowing that in reality you're a sub-standard version of yourself. However, all hope is not lost. I think the real tragedy is when you stop trying to improve yourself.
After a hearty conversation, the conclusion was that I need to go back to school.
"There's a lady named Lara who I'd like you to meet. She is the CEO of the President's Award Youth Empowerment Programme. I think your story can inspire a lot of young people, and she might be able to help you with some of the challenges that you're facing. It hurts me to see young people not fulfilling their potential. I want you to succeed. It's up to you to enroll for the degree, because come March, I'll be jetting off to New York. Then one day, while sipping a martini on my yacht, I'll be like, Yolanda who? Oh, she didn't take my advice? shame."
At this point of the conversation, the expression on my face is just blank. Not sure if I was stuck on the part where she's sipping martinis on a yacht *rolls eyes* or visualizing myself unsuccessful.
In essence, it was weird for me, to have a stranger be so passionate about my success. Intense.
A few days later...
I tried to apply for the degree programme only to realize, it was too late, and applications for the 2016 intake were closed. I told her about it. To my dismay, this was her response:
"If I may speak plainly and with truth... seems to me like you're looking to back out. If you're not ready, leave it... but I will only introduce you to Lara when you are a registered student."
So that was the end of that.

Scatter Brain
So... I've been thinking about enrolling for a one year course at a nearby college. (I won't say what course it is - don't wana jinx it), it's literally something that occurred to me while I was browsing the net and I decided to just apply for the course. I mean, I've always believed it's great to have skills in many different spheres, AND I'd love a new way to explore my creative streak (if I might say so myself). It's exciting to embark on something new.
Then. I quickly decided to tell my significant other about my new embarkment. Here's how the conversation went...
ME: Hey babe, I think I want to enroll for a
course. Lol
HIM: Erh... ok. You've decided that after one day? Smh
ME: Well, yes, I'm looking into it.
HIM: Lol, ok. I think I should have a chat with your boss. You have too much time on your hands!
ME: Really now?!? Whose side are you on?
HIM: I'm craving pizza.
So in a nutshell, my boyfriend didn't take me seriously. Now I've decided I really want to do this. Besides, I'll be paying for myself and attending Saturday classes. + I'm not going to tell anyone about it (well, unless they read the blog - but technically I didn't say what exactly it is that I'm doing - so I'm safe). Okay, I just had a one man conversation. Sigh.
PS: Are the spinning circles distracting you????? Hahaha, welcome to my world. Whenever I try to do something, there's always something distracting me.
And on a lighter note: I'm concurrently reading 3 books. Depending on my mood.
1) E L James : 50 Shades Darker. Yeah, I'm actually reading the sequel, but I must say, it's become quite dry, all Mr Grey and Ana ever do... is each other! I'd like the story to develop, it has so much potential.
2) George R. R. Martin : A Game of Thrones. Following my impatience for the next season, I decided to start reading the books.
3) Gillian Flynn : Dark Places. If you watched the movie, Gone Girl, same author, darker story line and 10 times creepier!!!

A Lesson Learnt
Since I started looking after myself, I'll admit - I was very naive about life. I didn't realise having to think of rent, food, transport, clothes, accounts, work and relationships would be this frustrating.
You just take everything for granted when it's given to you on a silver platter, but then again. I've discovered so many things about myself during this period. Some good, some not so... erh.. good. (Changes subject quickly)
One thing that's stuck out to me though, is my mom's attitude towards me these past few months. She's a very principled and very traditional woman. I respect her so much for that. However it makes her rigid and unaccepting of change. For example, it's culturally wrong for a daughter to move out of her mother's house before she's married. Exhibit A: ME! - Moves out at the age of 21 (with absolutely no plans of a mere engagement). So naturally, she is against my moving out. I understand that. Any mother would find it difficult to let their babies free into the cold, cruel world! However, it's been two years now. Our relationship has even developed astoundingly. (Or maybe that's just on my side). Once in a while, I ask her for something, it may be an item of clothing, or a handbag, and most recently, she bought a new washing machine and offered me the old one (which is already 2.5 years old). There's always one catch: I should pay her for anything I ask for!
yes - seriously!
Her response is always: you work now. Which is true, but by living by myself, I pay for everything anyway! I don't understand why she finds it so hard to support me, willingly, without me paying her.
The other weekend, we went to the mall, and she decided to get Burger King for her and my sister. Then she said,"You work, so I don;t have to buy you food right?" I nodded. "No hard feelings?" she added, and I nodded again. It's just at the point where even food is something she needs to use to prove a point. I've tried looking at it from different perspectives.Perhaps she doesn't think I'm ready to be looking after myself so she's trying to show me that nothing in life is easy, or free.
Bottom line: I get a reality check every day from life itself. I don't need it from my mom too...

'Til Divorce Do Us Part...
Marriage is funny, really, there you were: single (Life was simple). Then you meet some stranger, love them, marry them, then they become your other half! That's the easy part apparently. So for someone whose witnessed a failed marriage first hand, and knowing that 80% of the married people I know are unhappy, I can attest that marriage isn't as binding as the vows make it seem. Or so I thought...The divorce rate has steadily increased exponentially over the years. Some say women are just becoming too big for their own boots, trying to wear the pants in their relationships. Maybe. However I think women have just come to realise that they don't have to put up with the bullshit that men give us! I digress. That's another story (open for debate).
My point is, I've always believed that I should acquire my own assets before I get married. It's something my mother has always told me and it makes sense - financially. I had it all figured out, buy a house by the time I'm 25, and invest in whatever I can. So far so good.
Then when (if) I get married - I will get married out of community of property. My assets will be used to benefit both my husband and I, but I will have made provision to protect myself should anything happen. There's nothing wrong with that, is there?
Well, it recently came to my attention, that I've gone about this the WRONG way. As a Christian, I should not go into marriage prepared for a divorce. That contradicts the entire purpose of marriage in the first place. God hates divorce! (Yes, that's actually a quote from the Bible.) Moreover, it's wrong to get married out of community of property, whatever you had acquired prior to marriage should become your children's assets, and belong to both husband and wife.
I have been told to pray about removing the spirit of divorce from my life, and that if I rebuke it, it will not manifest in my life. I should go in a marriage with the mindset that I will stay in it no matter what. With prayer and faith, there will be no need to protect myself with material things. Powerful.
I had never looked at it from that perspective.
Needless to say, being a Christian gets harder everyday. It's funny that I thought I had everything figured out, but God keeps showing me, that my plans exclude him, and I need to grow my faith in order to truly experience his infinite Glory and favour.

Jumping the gun!
Do you ever feel like there's more to life? Not to be controversial, or make myself seem like I'm better than anyone else, but I often think, I can do better and be better than what I am today. Right now, I am not the best Yolanda I could've been. Yes, probably due to all the bad decisions I've made, but all I can do now, is pick myself up and move on in the right direction.
I've just started a new job. I'm a credit controller for a property management company. It's been two weeks, and I can honestly say, I can see myself growing here...
My previous job - I was a junior accountant for 11 months. After being there for 3 months, I was bored. Doing the same thing over and over is just not for me. There was no challenge. I told my mom about it, and she told me to be patient. Another 3 months later, nothing had changed. It only got worse. My performance and growth was directly proportional to that of my senior. I was told, I could only do more complex work, attain more responsibility and get a salary increase ONLY if my senior increased revenue for the company. It made me hate my job. I was stuck. How long would it take to wait for someone else to decide I needed to grow? It was then that I started looking for another job.
I explained the situation to my (very opinionated) uncle. His response was, "That's life and that's what the work environment is like. We don't always get what we want. Do you think we all enjoy going to work everyday? That's the problem with your generation! You have a sense of entitlement. You think everything should just be easy, but you're not willing to work hard for it!"
So.... that conversation wasn't leading anywhere productive. I hate being given a response that is of a generalized nature, when I'm talking about a personal issue. I thought about what he said. I tried to be objective, but I realized, I'm young, and there's no point tying myself to a company that doesn't give me the value that I know I'm worth. More over: I'm a lion. Not a sheep in the herd. It's not fulfilling for me to have my growth and success be dictated by someone else.
The worst was when they were looking for a new junior accountant. The salary offer was R500 less than mine. R500!!! Are they really saying the value that a new person would bring only has a R500 difference with the 10 months of experience and value that I added there?
It made me sick. I worked really hard and felt so unappreciated. I went to two unsuccessful interviews. Then finally. By the Grace of God, I received a job offer.
I knocked at my Boss' door, and he signaled at me to come in.
"What can I do for you Yolanda?"
"I received a job offer, and I want to take it. How do you feel about that?"
"Well, we all have our own agendas in life, and if what we're offering you here is not in line with what you want, then I can't keep you here. It's just that you are not patient Yolanda."
His response aggravated me, but kept me unresponsive at the same time. It was easy for him to say that. He didn't know how it felt to struggle to make ends meet every month. Or getting to work without knowing how I'd get home that very day. It was stressful. Going through a hard time whilst having a clear plan is motivating. As opposed to struggling with no end in sight. Nevermind that patience has never been one of my virtues - I just reached a point where I decided I was too young to be unhappy with my job. Something had to give. My mom thinks I made a mistake. She says, I was at a well established company and she agrees that I should've been patient. She could be right. Maybe I did jump the gun, but right now - things are looking up and that's all that matters.

Love is strange...
Okay so I know I'm going to sound really cheesy and boring but loving someone is such a weird phenomenon.
It makes you happy, it gets you excited, it makes you smile until your jaws hurt, it makes you glance at your phone every 5 seconds, it makes you stay up all night: thinking, it makes you try new things, it makes u want to be a better person, it gives you hope, it makes you passionate,it makes you cautious, it makes you irrational,it makes your heart ache, it makes you jealous, it makes you envious, it makes you question everything you believe, it makes you feel like you're nothing, it makes you hurt, it makes you cry,it makes you paranoid, it makes you psycho, it makes you scream, it makes you want to pack everything up and move to another continent. It makes you feel things and reach into the corners of your soul that you never knew you had. THEN, you start the cycle all over again, and hope it won't end the same way it did the first time. See! A strange phenomenon indeed...

A Little Goes A Long Way
Okay, so I know it's been a while. Too much has happened this year. I've moved 5 times. (Yes, 5 times!!), and no, I'm not a nomad, although I'm starting to feel like one. It's a funny story really. There's always something wrong, either the rent goes up alarmingly, just a month after I've moved in, or the housemate discloses that I can't have people over (after I've paid and moved in), or I realize that transport to work is difficult to get, or that the place is ugly. LOL. Okay maybe that last excuse isn't really a good one, but trust me, it had to be done.
I moved into a cute apartment about a week ago (no reference to the Bobby Shmurda song). I love the place. Near mom's house, near 2 malls, near my boyfriend, near my friends, affordable and close to work. It's perfect! BUT, my so-called housemate ditched me 4 days before we were due to move in. So long story short - only half my rent is paid. I'm really stressed out. Worried the owner will ask me to move out if I don't get someone to move in ASAP!!
Anyway, on a totally different topic, my faith is blossoming into something quite beautiful. (If I might say so myself). I used to be one of those people, who didn't really believe in God. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to believe, but I needed proof. I needed to experience this "Awesome God" that people speak of - In my own convincing way that I couldn't explain to anyone else.
Sure enough, I started attending a Bible study group, and to my dismay, I learnt (and I'm still learning) all the things I've been going about the wrong way. I've been trying to change these things about myself, and I must say, it's not easy. However, I've discovered it's my day to day choices that allow my spirit to grow. I've never been good at praying either, but that has also developed in the past few months. I often look at those Christians who attend every church gathering, pray twice a day (everyday) and say things like, "Have a blessed day!" And I think to myself, I'm not ready for that. I still want to drink and party and have not-so-Christian-like fun, lol, (okay that part makes sense to me.) It just seems like a thin line. You get the extreme church goers, then the ones who only remember they're Christian on Sunday at 10am. So where exactly am I?
In the past few months, good things have happened when I've made commitments to God. He's giving me proof that he's there. I can't explain how, but I now believe he's there. The more I see how easy it is to be in line with his mercy and favour. I find myself wanting more of it, but at the same time, I still want to do the things that tear me away from him. It's hard. Very hard.
Why isn't it easy to be a good Christian? Surely this is why most people fall off the path. And am I the only one who struggles to read the Bible? I find it hard to even remember verses, but I can memorize all the words in a rap song. It's strange.
My motto now is to drop one sin at a time. It's easier that way. I don't really think there's a true formula to being more like Jesus, but this is the best way I know how...

Ubuntu is a myth
Having been a foreigner in South Africa my entire life, Xenophobia is no new concept to me. I've always experienced it, be it from fellow classmates, teachers or the Zulu taxi driver who expects you to speak Zulu because you're in his taxi.
You would think, that after Apartheid, black people would know how it feels to have someone force their language on them. Instead, every second person you meet, is asking why you don't speak a South African vernacular language. Does it ever occur to any of them, that I have no interest in learning their languages, and that I have my own native language and culture to deal with. Why do people feel that I should speak their language just because I'm in their country? I'm suddenly judged, and told that I think I'm white because I choose to communicate in English.
It's not just black people... Majority of my colleagues are Afrikaans. I'll initiate a conversation with one of them, and it will be entertaining for everyone, until one responds in Afrikaans, and suddenly, people "forget" that I don't understand Afrikaans. That's normally my cue to exit the conversation and return to my work. I've stopped bothering to ask them to translate. I figured, if they want me to be part of the conversation, they will speak in English.
It gets to me sometimes. The MD will call a board meeting, and a question that needs deliberation will be raised... then BAM... people are speaking in Afrikaans! Why call me into the meeting at all? I instantly pull out a diary and proceed with my armature caricature drawings of each of them. The worst is when one of them has the audacity to ask me why I don't learn Afrikaans.
My mental response, is that hundreds of children were killed by Afrikaner's when they marched against being taught in Afrikaans. It is therefore, because of them, that I have the right to decide if I want to speak or learn the language of oppression!
In light of the recent Xenophobic events that have taken place in Durban and in Johannesburg, the behavior of these South Africans doesn't shock me. They seek comfort from blaming foreigners for their circumstances. Mob psychology is also a huge contributing factor in these communities. They fool themselves into thinking they have an effective formula for justice, when in reality, they are all accomplices of criminal behavior.
There seems to be a notion, that Xenophobia is only exercised by uneducated, poverty stricken people, however, from my own experiences, I can deduce that even the most educated people say and do things that indicate they'd prefer an environment that excluded foreigners. You see this behavior mostly in the work an environment. When a foreigner gets the job, or the promotion, we are suddenly hated. Forgetting that we had an equal chance to attain the opportunity.
I applaud all the international companies that have temporarily or permanently ceased all business operations with South Africans. It is time for the world to show South Africa that it is not an island. Perhaps this will educate them of the importance of foreigners for the South African economy, and help them acquire respect for other people who are not their own.

Stranger on my own blog???
Okay, I'll be the first to say it's been almost a year since my last post *face palm enfused with shocked face*
I guess I just got a little busy. Okay I'm lying. No one is that busy! So I guess I owe you guys a very updated, erh, update...
1. Since I graduated... it's been a rough year. In March, I hosted an event at an upmarket club in Rosebank.I tell you it's harder than it looks. However there's more to that story- I planned the entire event with 3 other guys for 2 months. Then a week before the event, one of the guys demanded 35% of the profits or he'd pull out. I told him where to get off, and as expected, he bailed.(He's still sour about it) Then he decided he wanted me to pay him for coming up with the name "Frivolous Fridays" and for designing the flyer. I refused to part with a cent. Ended up having to change the whole concept and flyers 3 days before the event. It wasn't a flop, but it wasn't an epic success either! I managed to break even. Paid the Djs, and other parties involved, and had a meesly R500 left. After all that effort!! Club owner was impressed and wanted me to plan another event. I agreed, then realised it was a bad idea. So yes, there was never a second event.
2. I moved out of my mom's house. I must say, freedom is SCHWEEEEET! Nobody giving you curphews, nobody giving you funny looks when you get home at an odd hour and best of all, not having to ask for permission and explain yourself when random plans pop up. I can get home and get straight into bed, then wake up at 2am and make a sandwich, *sigh* it's an awesome feeling. It was good while it lasted, cause I actually moved back to her house about a week ago. (No reference to the Bobby Shurda song) The short of it - being an adult is hard. Tried it for a year. Constantly having to worry about rent, food, transport etc. is super stressful. Maybe I should just enjoy being a kid while I stilll can... or NOT! I was told to contribute a portion of my salary to houseold stuff.
3. I GOT A JOB!!! Nothing too glamourous, and no, I don't earn a 5 digit paycheck, but it's a start. It's a financial services company headed by my boss, whose not in his mid-forties. I'm his PA, turns out you can be the MD of an accounting firm before you're 30. He inspires me. I guess I have another 8 years to totally transform myself. *Looks in mirror* - probably not! But... on a serious note, I'm looking forward to gaining the experience I need.
4. I got over my ex and moved on!!! (YEY ME!) It all happened very quickly- (by quickly, I mean a week) Initially I thought he'd be a rebound. Not to mention he had a girlfriend when I met him. (No I didn't break them up) The way we met was funny, but I can't share that part with you. Anyway, I've been with him for 6 months now, and I must say, he's amazing. (I guess they all are after 6 months), but really, dating him has made me realise the things I missed out on with my ex. Not that I'm comparing them. Never that! but, there are a lot of things I compromised with my ex, small things, things that made me happy. Like celebrating Valentines day, or going on double dates with my bestie, or random romantic messages, and most importantly, hearing "I love you". As cheesy as it sounds, you don't realise how significant those small things are, until you date someone who doesn't do them.
5. I had a business idea that failed. It was an awesome idea. Everyone will agree there, but I kept doubting myself and procrastinating. In the end, when I decided to follow through with it, it was too late. I had missed the tender submission deadline by A DAY! I guess I sometimes have trouble believing in myself and my own capabilities and I just have this wild idea that I'm not the kind of person who waits on one paycheck every month. I feel like I have more to offer the world and myself. So yes, I have a new idea, but it needs a team of people who are willing to believe in me and take me on as a project!!! All I have to do now: is find those people...
6. Being a Christian has taken a new turn for me. Going to Bible study cell groups has totally changed my perspective on my religion. For the first time, I genuinely want to grow in faith and become a devout Christian who leads a straight Christian lifestyle. I'd love to learn verses and quote them word for word- but my brain wasn't built for that. However, being a Christian is far harder than I thought it would be. I find myself opting for sins of the flesh, than "fruits of the spirit". I'd still rather go to a party than go to church- so I guess I'm still off track. I have no doubt that there have been some scenarios in the last few months which I believe were miracles, but I'm sure some would bet it was pure coincidence. My journey is far from it's end, and I'll strive to practise the WWJD phenomenon. I'm proud to say, I've returned to my duties of being a sunday school teacher!! It's fun to have kids for 2 hours once a week! (but everyday? I don't know how parents do it)
7. Friendships are hard to nurture when you work AND live at home. I sometimes find myself feeling like I don't have enough friends, but whenever I try to reach out to them, they're also busy. So I guess I'm not the only one. It's just very difficult to balance, romance, family and a social life (and a curphew). I just hope I'll master the art soon.
That's basically it. A 7-point round up of my life at this very moment. Interesting, isn't it?

Guy Code!!
Okay, so who knew that men also have a bunch of rules they need to stick to?! After having a looooong chat with some of the boys- here's what we came up with... (and they say ladies are complicated)
1. It is permissible to drink a fruity alcohol drink only when you're sunning on a tropical beach ... And it's delivered by a topless model and only when it's free.
2. Phrases that may NOT be uttered to another man while lifting weights: a) Yeah, Baby, Push it! b) C'mon, give me one more! Harder! c) Another set and we can hit the showers
3. There is no reason for guys to watch Ice Skating or Men's Gymnastics. Ever
4. Under no circumstances may two men share an umbrella.
5. If you've known a guy for more than 24 hours, his sister is off limits forever unless you actually marry her.
6. Any Man who brings a camera to a bachelor party may be legally killed and eaten by his buddies.
7. No man shall ever be required to buy a birthday present for another man. In fact, even remembering your buddy's birthday is strictly optional. At that point, you must celebrate at a strip bar of the birthday boy's choice.
8. Unless he murdered someone in your family, you must bail a friend out of jail within 12 hours
9. Under no circumstances may two men share an umbrella. 2. It is OK for a man to cry ONLY under the following circumstances: (a) When a heroic dog dies to save its master. (b) The moment Angelina Jolie starts unbuttoning her Blouse. (c) After wrecking your boss's car. (d) When she is using her teeth (e) when your mom dies 10. Moaning about the brand of free beer in a buddy's fridge is forbidden, However complain at will if the temperature is unsuitable.
11. Never hesitate to reach for the last beer or the last slice of pizza, but not both, that's just greedy.
12. If you compliment a guy on his six-pack, you'd better be talking about his choice of beer.
13.Never allow a telephone conversation with a woman to go on longer than you are able to have sex with her. Keep a stopwatch by the phone. Hang up if necessary
14. It is acceptable for you to drive her car. It is not acceptable for her to drive yours
15. Thou shalt not buy a car in the colours of brown, pink, lime green, orange or sky blue
16. The girl who replies to the question "What do you want for Christmas?" with "If you loved me, you'd know what I want!" gets an Xbox. End of story
17. We've all heard about people having guts or balls. But do you really know the difference between them? In an effort to keep you informed, the definition of each is listed below: "GUTS" is arriving home late after a night out with The guys, being assaulted by your wife with a broom, And having the guts to say, "are you still cleaning or are you flying somewhere?" "BALLS" is coming home late after a night out with the guys smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the ass and having the balls to say, "You're next!" Hopefully this clears up any confusion
18. When stumbling upon other guys watching a sporting event, you may ask the score of the game in progress, but you may never ask who's playing.

Little fish. Endless Ocean
Okay, so first off, I'll start by saying: I'M OFFICIALLY A GRADUATE!! Secondly, I'm now completely independent. Third I'm still single. I think those three statements pretty much round up everything that's going on right now. It's quite overwhelming, especially when you don't have support from the people you need it from the most. However, knowing that I have to put a roof over my own head has lead to some interesting self discovery opportunities. I've learnt a lot about myself in the last few weeks. Pushed some boundaries, drew new lines (erased old ones), developed new relationships and let go of some that had clearly reached their expiration date!
The thing that scares me the most: if I had to see myself a year from now: would I recognise myself? (and I'm not refering to all the take-aways I've been eating lately) I mean will I still be the Yolanda I am now. Sometimes life pushes you in directions you'd never intended on taking, but how do you stay intact...
I hope I can read this a year from now, and still be able to say I'm the same person.

Bright or Bleak?
Okay so I guess my outlook on 2014 isn't very optimistic (the hint is in the title, in case you missed it!) With graduation around the corner, you'd expect me to be bouncing up and down with joy, but I'm not. If anything, I'm scared of what the world has in store for me. I'll admit I've already made some bad decisions this year and I don't see it looking up.
On the other hand, my mom has agreed to let me start a new course, and I thought this would be my chance to finally persue my journalism career, however she's against it. "Journalists don't make money." or her new favourite line: "How many rich journalists do you know?" She keeps reminding me that some dreams are meant to stay as dreams. I don't know what's more painful, knowing that my mother has zero faith in me or considering that she might be right?
My relationships with a few people have deteriorated as well. Needless to say that I'm single (again) and I'd rather not go into that. Infact, now that I think about it, I haven't talked about it with anyone. Maybe it's because I know I messed up. *sigh*
I'm just waiting for something amazing to happen, or am I supposed to make it happen?! I wish there were maps or 'How to' books on these type of things...

Ctrl. Alt. Abort
Okay, so this topic is one that usually instigates a never ending debate, but it is definately one that has popped up quite a few times this year: ABORTION.
Someone close to me has agreed to share her experience...
9 September 2014. It was a Tuesday morning that I'll never forget. I opted to go to a government clinic, as I couldn't afford to pay for an abortion at a private clinic. I arrived at 7am, but the were already long queues stretching out into the corridors of the hospital. Sick people, crying babies, people sleeping on chairs, some seemed as though they had been waiting for an eternity. I felt sick just looking at them. I proceeded to the wards, following the hand drawn arrows someone had stuck up on the walls. "Family planning", "Termination of pregnancy."
I starred at the signs for a bit, criticizing myself for not having been on contraception. I could have avoided all of this. The chatter from the nurses walking up from behind me interrupted my thoughts. I picked up my pace, and went round another corner. These corridors were quiet. A few more metres and I turned right into a crowded room. There were two nurses seated at an old wooden table.Facing the girls, they called out names at regular intervals, for them to sit in the order they were allocated. I was no stranger to this. I had been here the day before...
A week ago. I had come to make an appointment for an abortion. I then had to pee on a pregnancy test that looked more like a random two-toned piece of metal. It confirmed there was life in my womb. We then lined up and had an ultrasound done. I lowered my pants, lifted my top, and awkwardly got onto the hard, weathered bed. I wondered how many girls had been there before me. The tingle of the cold jelly-like substance alerted me as the nurse smeared it onto my belly. She asked me a few questions. She wasn't friendly. She said she couldn't find the baby. For a moment I thought the nightmare had ended, and that I wasn't pregnant at all. Then she told me it was normal, and that I had to wait a week, then come back.
In no time... a week had gone by. I returned to the wretched place. Same procedure. This time the damn thing was visible. I was 6 weeks along. I was then told to go to another waiting room down the corridor. There were 6 girls there. They chatted quietly amongst themselves, about the abortion procedure. I sat down on old leather arm chair. The girl closest to me asked me how far along I was. "6 weeks. You?", "10!" Before I could respond, the mean nurse marched in. "Ladies, I need you to fill out these consent forms. In simple terms, the clinic doesn't take liability for complications or unforeseen circumstances during the termination. It is also confirmation that you have independently decided to go through with the termination, and no one has forced you into it." I signed the document, and let the girl next to me, sign as a witness.
Miss Nurse collected the forms. Then handed out tablets in silver packets. "You all need to be here tomorrow, by 7am sharp. Make sure you wake up and take these tablets at 4am. Set your alarm if you have to. After you take the pill, make sure you put on a sanitary pad. Do not use tampons. Then, please bring a morning gown, or a loose dress to change into before the procedure, a packed lunch, extra sanitary pads, and toiletries if you wish to shower." I made a mental list of everything she said. Then took my phone out to set the 4am alarm. She dismissed us...
* * * * * *
I really could've avoided all this. I was the second one to arrive. I greeted the girl, who I recognised from the day before. She sat awkwardly on a wooden stool. I found a chair in the corner and put my big bag down on the chair next to me. By 06:40, the other 5 girls had arrived. We talked about how nervous and scared we were. Miss Nurse walked in at 7:15. So much for "7am sharp!" I rolled my eyes at her. "Ladies, I trust you all took the pills at 4am. you should be bleeding by now. I need you to follow me to the wards. There, you will find eight beds. You will each occupy one. Change into your gowns. Keep your sanitary pads on!" Her voice was stiff and emotionless. We settled in the cold sterile room. Again, I wondered how many others had been there before me, oblivious to the pain they would soon undergo.
At 07:45 Miss Nurse came back to check on us. She explained that she'd be in the operation room right across the corridor, we would go in one by one, take off the sanitary pad and dispose of it in the bin behind her, then roll up our gowns, climb onto the bed, and prop our legs up onto the metal arms of the bed. Same stance as the one you're in when you go for a gynae check. She asked if any of us had started bleeding. I hadn't, I slowly glanced over at all the other girls. One girl put her hand up. "I'll start with you then." None of us envied her.
She bravely got up and shyly pulled her gown to cover her exposed thighs. She followed the nurse out of the ward. We all watched quietly. Moments later, the girl staggered in, holding her stomach, tears in her eyes, avoiding eye contact with any of us. She stopped at the side of her bed, pulled over the plastic covers, and gently got onto the bed. She was lying on her stomach. Wincing in pain. After a long silence, someone asked her how it was. She lifted her head and said, "I'm just glad it's finally over." Miss Nurse popped her head in. "I want you guys to keep coming in, one after the other."
One by one, the girls went in and out. Coming back in the same manner as the first girl. She had recovered by now. I was the fifth one to go in.
It looked like a crime scene. There was blood everywhere. I began to panic. I halted behind her and quietly chucked the pad into the bin. As I looked in, I saw clots of blood and what seemed like... "Miss... are we going to get on with it or not?" I quickly walked over to the bed, pulled up my dress, climbed up the two stairs, then rested myself on the hard bed. My heart was racing. I told myself to relax but my subconscious was running wild with her hands in the air, as if a fire alarm had broke out! Miss Nurse adjusted the head light onto the view of my wide spread legs. "I'm just going to clean you to prepare for the procedure. It's not going to hurt." I saw her attach two cotton swabs onto a pair of 30cm silver tongs. She dipped them into a bowl of brown liquid. I assumed that was the disinfectant. Then she shoved it into my vagina and cleaned the insides. I cringed. My thighs instinctively retracted. "No, no, no, this is not going to work if you close your legs. You need to keep them open otherwise you make it difficult for both of us!" I slowly opened them again. She pulled out the damn tongs. I starred at the ceiling. Okay, it's not that bad. It was just uncomfortable, I told myself. She sat on a stool at the edge of the bed. Then pulled out a silver tool that she slid into me and used to open me up. It was cold and hard.
I stopped looking. She put something else in. Then she rammed it up. I could feel it going up into places where metal things shouldn't venture. I t was uncomfortable, but nothing could've ever prepared me for the pain that was about to come next. All I heard was a sucking sound. The pain was immense, I tried to close my legs. "Don't be a coward!" I opened them again. The sucking noise started again. I yelled out in pain. I wanted to yell again, but I couldn't gather the strength. Tears came to my eyes. A bolt of sweat appeared on my forehead. I felt as though I was going to pass out. My insides were turning. Literally. "Please stop!!" I said, but she carried on mercilessly. It was excruciatingly unbearable. All I could manage were gasps. The tool detached things from my womb by scraping against the walls. I struggled to breathe. I wanted to yell out again, but no sound came out. It seemed like an eternity of pain. Then finally she stopped. She pulled out the tools and went about her business. I focused on the ceiling. I felt a wave of nausea come over me. I got up of the bed and weakly walked out of the horror ward and into the corridor.
I could feel the vomit welling up. I walked as quickly as my weak legs could carry me to the bathroom. I puked, then a sudden bout of diarrhea. I was sweating so much, that my dress became soaked. It took a while to regain my strength. Finally, I headed back to the ward, and dragged myself onto the cold bed. I now had cramps. 30 minutes later, Miss Nurse came in and told us we needed to get ready to leave. I hated her. I needed another hour to rest. I picked up the phone and sent my boyfriend a message. "It's over. It was so painful." Part of me wished he could've endured the pain too. It was unfair... I then thought of the life I had just ended. I wondered if it would've been a boy or a girl. Whatever it was, it was lying in the Medical Waste bin along with the other 5 fetuses that had been violently removed from their mother's wombs.
I will never forget...

Sugar What???
Okay, so we live in times where men no longer have to 'work' before we (us females) give up the cookie. So one of my girlfriend's said, "If we're going to give it up- might as well get something out of it!" Which sounded logical enough, but then it hit me - if you're going to sleep with a guy for money, how different are you from the 69th Avenue prostitute?? I mean yeah you might be dating the guy but if your primary objective for being with him is money, I don't see much difference.
I met a guy. I'm not too sure how old he is, but judging from his looks and demeanor- he's over 25. His taste in music and the way his pants hang below the waist- I can safely say he's not over 35! Anyway, I was walking and he stopped and offered me a ride. I said no and proceeded on my path. "You're too beautiful to be walking on suc a hot day," he said. That seemed to catch my attention. He was right. I opened the front door of his red GTi and hopped in. He told me his name and I told him mine, then he asked me where I was going. He asked for my number and within 5 minutes I was dropped off! He called me later... "I'm a guy with very few needs. Money isn't a problem for me and you seem like the kind of girl who has a lot of expenses. How about you take care of my needs and I take care of yours? We can meet up on your terms and if you don't want to be seen with me in public that's fine!" He then asked for my account number and he deposited money in my account. I havent really talked to him since then but on broke days I think about about calling him! Could I be falling victim to the predators they call Sugar Daddys?? Who knows!
AND ON A LIGHTER NOTE.... 5 signs that you aren't HOTT!
#1 You dress like a loser
#2 You're kept in the friendzone
#3 Your body has expanded in places in shouldn't
#4 You're often told you have inner beauty
#5 You get a lot of fake numbers

That girl I've seen around
Okay, so missing people in Johannesburg is probably something "normal". Infact, at some point I was probably a missing person myself! I don't know, it's different this time, the first time I saw the poster on the glass doors of our campass cafeteria, my heart sank. I don't even know her personally, she's one of those random girls I've seen around on campass for the past 3 years, but seeing her picture on a 'missing persons' document made me really sad. I imagined what her family is going through: going to bed every night not knowing if your child is dead or alive and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it! She dissapeared without a trace. It's been more than a month now. I want to hope she's alive but watching the news everyday is really probing the splinter of doubt in my mind. Last week a naked, headless body (which according to police, fit her description) was found in an open veld in surrounding areas but when the family saw the body, they confirmed it wasn't her. A friend of mine says it would've been better if the headless body was their daughter's. Yes, if she's dead they need her body to bury, but finding her like that would've been more traumatic in my opinion. Is it better to live with hope that your loved one is still alive, or to find their body? I wouldn't know. I hope I never have to know.

A bleeding heart
Okay, so some days I just feel like, turning off my phone. Packing up my shit. Leaving without saying a word. And going ghost for a few weeks. It would just be great to be in my own little bubble, apart from the occasional anxiousness of waiting for a call I know I'm not going to receive. *sigh* Waiting is painful, trying to forget is painful, but not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering. Especially when the one person I really want to talk to, is the person I need to stay away from! Its funny, really. I'm starting to see him in a new light. As principled as I thought he was, I hate how he has double standards. When it comes to me- his principles and values are only an issue when it's convenient for him. I mean, if you're going to be principled: be principled monday to sunday! Further more, don't tell me you care about me and that you're there for me if it's just words! Everytime I move 2 steps forward- I manage to move 5 steps back. I almost regret the whole relationship. I can't help but wonder if my life would've been better, had I not met him. Not that I blame him for anything but hey, that's just how I feel!
Moral of this story: the scary thing about dating is that you're either going to get married or break up! :/ (Yes, that's me trying to depress you!)
